Bagman for one of Ireland’s biggest drug mobs earned €7,000 per month travelling to collect payments for The Family

The Irish Sun can reveal a secret ledger exposed Co Laois builder Darren Hoey’s extra income.

Hoey — who worked in construction — earned the cash by travelling across Ireland to collect payments from customers of ‘The Family’.

Once collected, the gangland financial controller’s role was to vacuum-pack the cash before bringing it to other senior members of the gang.

Details of his tax-free income were revealed in the ledger which also showed how the mob, who run operations on a similar scale to the Kinahan cartel, were involved in €17million worth of drugs transactions over a three-month period before Hoey’s arrest last September.

But Hoey’s contract with The Family is now over after he was caged for seven years last Thursday at Tralee Circuit Court for laundering over €3.5m of the gang’s cash.

Gardai believe the money was to be used for drug shipments that would later be sent to Ireland.
