Malaysian central bank SWIFT network targeted, Philippine banks ‘alert’

The Philippine central bank issued a notice to its banks to be ‘extra careful’ during the holiday following a cyber attack at Malaysia’s central bank.

On Tuesday Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) identified a cyber attack which is understood to have involved ‘falsified wire-transfer requests over the SWIFT bank messaging network,’ Reuters reported.

BNM ‘did not say who was behind the attack, or how they accessed its SWIFT servers.’ the news agency said, ‘The alert was issued on Wednesday, and there had been no specific threat, officials said.’

A SWIFT spokesman said: “SWIFT does not comment on individual entities. When a case of potential fraud is reported to us, we offer our assistance to the affected user to help secure its environment

“We have no indication that our network and core messaging services have been compromised.”
